There are various definitions for “a knowledge economy,” but I think of it as one in which the majority of economic activity is based on knowledge rather than manual labor. But now the value-chain of knowledge is shifting. The question is not whether you have knowledge but know how to compute new knowledge from it, almost always applying computing power to help.The most developed economies of the future will have a majority of economic activity innovating by computing or generating new knowledge and applying it, not just deploying existing knowledge. It’s in this sense I believe we’re heading for a “computational knowledge economy”.
